Tips for Home Buyers

Congratulations!  You have decided to purchase a home, or are thinking about buying one.  You'll be joining the ranks of hundreds of others who realize that home ownership offers a number of benefits including building equity, saving for the future, and creating an environment for your family.  When you own your own home, your hard-earned dollars contribute to builiding equity. The equity you earn is yours.  Over time, your home will increase in value.

Tips for Buyers

Understand what you can afford. Obtain a mortgage pre-qualification. This will give you more credibility with the seller when you make an offer on a house and it will give you a comfort level if you'd like to make a more competitive offer on a particular house. Don't rely solely on the opinion of your mortgage broker, only you can really determine what payments and price you will be comfortable with.

Take photos and notes of houses you are considering. This will help you keep the details clear in your mind when discussing the features of a particular property later.

Be open with your agent and family members about your priorities. Some of your needs may be fixed, such as number of bedrooms or proximity to a particular school but many of your preferences, like the desire for a fireplace or formal living room can be overlooked for the perfect location.

As the process of previewing houses moves forward, you may come to better understand your needs and what is available in your price range. Be sure to communicate any changes to your agent and let them know if you're willing to compromise on a specific detail or are willing to expand your search to find the perfect home for you.
